Dislipemias primarias

Instituto Aragonés de Ciencias de la Salud, Hospital Miguel Servet. Zaragoza

Primary Dyslipidemias Group, Miguel Servet University Hospital, IACS, Zaragoza. The group, composed of doctors, chemists, biochemists and nutritionists, has three research components:

  1. Lipids Unit. Reference unit for the Zaragoza community that cares for patients with primary disorders of lipid metabolism, particularly focused on subjects with a family histoy of hypercholesterolemia. The unit attends 2,500 patients each year and conducts an exhaustive study of risk factors, lipid metabolism, carotid and femoral echography for the detection of subclinical arteriosclerosis, echographic detection of tendinous xanthomas, and body composition. The Unit participates in many clinical trials, mainly Phase II and III trials of new hypolipemiant drugs.
  2. Biobank of Clinical Samples. The available biological samples are serum, plasma and DNA of some 4000 subjects affected with various diseases related to lipid metabolism. Most of the samples are collected from the Lipids Unit and are used for the group's basic research and for collaborations with other related groups.
  3. Molecular Research Laboratory. Translational research related to lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk is conducted at this laboratory in Miguel Servet University Hospital, using a variety of genotyping, proteomic and metabolomic techniques.

Major Lipids Group Research Lines:

  • Genetic bases of dominant autosomic hyperlipemias. The objective is to identify new loci responsible for primary forms of hyperlipidemia not dependent on the LDLR gene.
  • Relationships between the phenotype and genotype of primary dyslipidemias. The objective is to identify the genetic and environmental factors that modify cardiovascular disease and the lipid phenotype of primary dyslipidemias.
