DARIOS

The DARIOS (Dyslipidemia, Atherosclerosis Risk, elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein [hsCRP], and Inflammatory and Oxidative Status in the Spanish population) project is a collaboration of 11 research groups in Spain. The primary objectives are the estimation of the prevalence of classical cardiovascular risk factors (DARIOS Epidemiological) and biomarkers of inflammation and oxidation (DARIOS Inflammatory) in representative population samples.

The DARIOS Epidemiology study collected individual data from more than 28,000 residents aged 35 to 74 years in 10 Autonomous Communities of Spain (Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Canary Islands, Catalonia, Navarra, Madrid, Extremadura, Balearic Islands and Murcia), which together comprise 70% of the Spanish population. This is the first study with these characteristics conducted entirely in the 21st Century. The hope is that the results will serve as a reference for risk factor monitoring in Spain in coming years.

The DARIOS analysis of inflammation has studied the reference values for the Spanish population for diverse biomarkers of inflammation (hsCRP, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, alpha tumor necrosis factor, gamma interferon, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1); coagulation (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1), oxidation (anti-oxidized LDL antibodies), hemodynamics (B-type brain natriuretic peptide) and myocardial lesion (troponin I).
